KARACHI: Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) chief Taha Farooqui, pointing out that all the garbage being generated by the metropolis was not reaching the landfill sites, has urged the civic agencies to ensure that their waste reaches the required destination, reported leading English daily.

Addressing a meeting attended by representatives of various civic agencies in the metropolis on Thursday, he urged the participants to ensure that the solid waste generated in their respective areas was neither burnt nor dumped into the sea as both created marine/air pollution and harmed the environment.

He said that the computer system was operational at the landfill sites and computerised receipts were given to the garbage trucks/dumpers of the civic agencies/contractors bringing in the garbage there.

By reviewing the receipts issued to the garbage dumpers at the landfill sites the board knew from which areas the garbage was not coming in. He also asked the representatives of these civic agencies that if garbage from their areas was not reaching the landfill sites then how and where was it being disposed of.

The SSWMB chief urged the civic agency officials to make payments to only those garbage truck drivers/dumper operators/contactors who presented the computerised receipts issued to them at the landfill sites.

He also asked them to devise a mechanism so that garbage generated in their respective areas safely reached the landfill sites so that it could be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

Officials of the cantonment boards, Pakistan Railways, Civil Aviation Authority, SITE, etc participated in the meeting, says a statement.
