ISLAMABAD: Senator Farhatullah Babar on Thursday said that he could not applaud the Supreme Court’s (SC) recent verdict against former premier Nawaz Sharif as a triumph for anyone since it had weakened the Parliament.

He said that although Nawaz himself was responsible for the situation created in the aftermath of the verdict, he could not consider it a victory for anyone because it had weakened the Parliament by striking down on a law that the legislative body had passed.

“The Wednesday verdict had enlarged the scope of Articles 62 and 63 on one hand and weakened the Parliament by striking down a law passed by it on the other,” he said.

He said that for quite some time a whispering campaign was going on, suggesting that efforts were afoot to get the elections postponed and pave way for a government of technocrats to rule for three to four years to eventually re-write the political landscape of the country.

He said that the Wednesday verdict had the potential to increase political instability and asked the Parliament to play its role in averting instability. While abiding by the court verdict everyone must now act in a manner to avert instability, he added.

Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani said that he had also repeatedly warned against the undermining of the Parliament. He expressed hope for the Parliament to overcome the challenge.
