- Ishaq Dar to only contest for technocrat seat
ISLAMABAD: The deadline to withdraw nominations from the Senate elections for the provinces ended on Monday, according to the schedule released by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The final list of candidates would be published thereafter.
The elections are scheduled to be held on the March 3 because out of the 104 senators, 52 would retire on the March 11.
A total of 26 candidates are competing in Balochistan, with 15 on general, five on technocrats’ and six on women seats for a total of 11 vacancies.
Ishaq Dar has withdrawn his nomination on the general seat and will contest for the technocrat seat. There are 27 candidates competing for a total of 11 vacancies in Punjab, according to Punjab Election Commissioner Sharifullah.
In addition, 14 candidates are competing for seven general seats, five each for two women and technocrats’ seats, and three competing for the minorities’ seats.
Separate schedules were released for the provinces, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Islamabad due to a delay in extending the Elections Act, 2017 to FATA and Islamabad by the president.
For the Islamabad seats, the election tribunal will decide over appeals for accepting and rejecting the candidature today with the last date for withdrawal set for February 21. Likewise, the decision over appeals would be finalised on February 20 and the last date for withdrawal would be on February 22.
11 candidates are to be elected from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan each whilst 12 are allotted to Punjab and Sindh each.
