Only 67 scholars out of 1428 returned Pakistan after completing education

ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Technical Training was told on Monday that all expenses were collected including fine from 67 scholars out of total 1428 scholars who went abroad for higher education.
The committee met here in the Parliament House with Senator Nuzhat Sadiq in the chair. The meeting was further told that legal action has been started to collect money from 248 officers. The Ministry of Federal Education and Technical Training has sought a sum of Rs 11833.988 million. The said money would be spent on eleven continued and five new schemes.
Higher Education Commission (HEC) has sought Rs 40000 million for financial year 2018-19 for different development schemes. The amount is proposed to be spent on 181 new and 134 un-approved projects, the meeting was told. It also approved National Civic Education Commission Bill 2018 moved by Senator Sehar Kamran while National Skill University, Islamabad Bill 2017 was also approved unanimously.
The committee also forwarded draft of National Civic Education Commission Bill 2018 and National Skill University Islamabad Bill 2017 to Senate for final approval. Briefing the commission, Federal Minister Baleegh-ur-Rehman demanded the increase in annual budget of Ministry of Education.
The details given by HEC officials stated that 207799 students were facilitated from prime minister’s reimbursement scheme. It was told that meeting that HEC has awarded 56524 scholarships for different programmes since its inception while 30074 students have completed their education.
Senator Sehr Kamran, Senator Bushra Gull, Federal Education Minister Baleegh-ur-Rehman, HEC Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed, Education secretary and others attended the meeting.
