NAB chief directs inquiry against housing minister

ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chief Justice (r) Javed Iqbal on Monday ordered an inquiry against Federal Minister for Housing and Works Akram Durrani for inflicting losses of millions to the national exchequer.

Durrani has been accused of allotting the government plots to his favourites which were situated at the Pakistan Housing Authority’s land at Kuri Road, Sector I-12 and Sector I-16– an abuse of his authority.

Meanwhile, the anti-graft bureau has sought an inquiry report from the circle registrar of Rawalpindi’s cooperative housing societies regarding Rs 4 billion corruption in the Airport Cooperative Housing Society.

According to documents, NAB Rawalpindi had written a letter wide no: 2857/17/comp/nab/rwp/11628  to the registrar on Nov 30, 2017, and inquired about the allotment of plots to the victims of the said society.

The letter read that the housing society promised to allot plots to the victims, but after many years, the promises were not fulfilled.

The victims of the scam had submitted several applications to the society registrar and police, however, their pleas fell on deaf ears.

After issuance of the letter from the NAB, the society with the connivance of the registrar gave letters from another society, in which a new promise of giving plot was made, but that too was not fulfilled.

According to documentary proof, victims also gave applications to the Central Police Office (CPO) Rawalpindi for justice, but that too was in vain. The CPO had deliberately extended favours to the housing society.

Online quoted sources as saying that the criminal record of the society head was also given to the CPO, but no action taken by the time of filing of this report.
