ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court issued on Monday a show-cause notice to Federal Privatisation Minister Daniyal Aziz in the contempt of court case against him.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed conducted the proceedings.

As Aziz appeared in court, the bench observed that contempt of court by the minister can be construed after perusing transcripts of his speeches from three TV channels.

The court then adjourned the hearing for Friday and directed the attorney general to be present in court so the case may move forward.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Interior Affairs Tallal Chaudhry got a week to prepare for his case after he was able to hire a counsel for him within a deadline specified by the apex court.

Tallal Chaudhry appeared before the Supreme Court of Pakistan in contempt of court case. He was accompanied by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)leaders Mussadiq Malik and Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and comprising Justice Maqbool Baqar and Justice Faisal Arab was hearing the case.

At the last hearing, the apex court gave one more week to engage a counsel in the contempt case.

Appearing before the three-judge bench, Chaudhry contended that he had requested noted lawyer Asma Jahangir to be his counsel, but owing to her demise, he was at present without legal representation.

Jahangir passed away in Lahore on February 11 after suffering a stroke.

The apex court initiated contempt proceedings against Tallal Chaudhry on account of “derogatory and contemptuous speeches/statements” with regard to the honourable court, read a notification issued on February 2.

The same day, Daniyal Aziz had been issued a contempt of court notice by the Supreme Court, reportedly over his controversial speeches and statements made during various TV talk shows.

On February 7, Aziz was granted 10 days by the Supreme Court to finalise legal representation for the contempt notice issued to him.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed conducted the proceedings.
