Pakistan Army wins rugby championship

LAHORE: Pakistan Army clinched the 5th Servis Tyres 15-a-side Rugby Championship title organized by the Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU) here at the Pakistan Rugby Academy Lahore Cantt on Sunday.

The final match was contested between Islamabad Jinns and Army, where the former played better rugby and defeated the latter by 11-7, but the Army topped the points table with 21 points and therefore, they were declared the title winners.

The Islamabad Jinns were second with 18 points and Lahore Rugby Football Club (LRFC) secured the third position with 15 points. Lahore Hawks Rugby Club was fourth with 6 points while the Lodhran team couldn’t win any point.

Although, the Pakistan Army was declared the winner of the championship but the Islamabad Jinns team remained dominant in the last game and played impressively in the second half, thus winning the last contest.

The 15-a-side rugby league continued for six months and 24 teams were vying against their respective opponents in three divisions. In Division One, the top division, five teams including Pakistan Army, Islamabad Jinns, LRFC, Lahore Hawks, and Lodhran, played eight matches each.

PRU patron Lt Gen (R) Ashraf Saleem graced the event as chief guest while PRU Chairman Fawzi Khawaja, Servis Tyres GM Marketing Rana Saeed, Tariq Niazi, Yahya Bhatti, Shakeel Ahmad Malik, Haji Anwaar and a great number of rugby lovers were also present on the occasion to witness the final match. A large number of university students including the hockey team of University of Lahore (UoL) watched the match as well.
