Failing ratio in schools, colleges, and universities Part-2

Poor time management

Many students do not realise the importance of education or consider it a piece of cake. They do not give proper time to their studies. Instead of studying, they devote most of their time to playing games, having affairs and sleeping, etc. It is sad that majority of the students do not even make a proper timetable.  They think that they will be able to do well by studying a night before an exam. However, it is not that easy and often results in outright failure.

Bad company

It is often said that a man is known by the company he keeps. No one can deny the accuracy of this statement. A person’s company does matter a lot. Your company and your friends can either make you succeed in life or can make you a failure. One of the biggest reasons why teenage students fail in school and college is that they get involved in unproductive activities. Teenage is that age of life where it is most difficult to differentiate between right and wrong.

Unqualified teachers

A student cannot always be blamed for his or her failure. Many other factors can be the reason behind that failure. If we observe the present situation carefully, we will find that sometimes the flaw is on the side of the teachers as well. Not everyone can be a teacher, but unfortunately, it seems like a majority of the people do not understand this. Many people think it is the most comfortable profession and therefore anyone who fails to be what he/she wanted to become starts teaching students. However, being a teacher in a real sense is the most difficult task. A teacher must be fully qualified and a master in his/her field. Otherwise, the success rate of students would obviously be very low.

Every school and college must have a basic health center and regular medical check-up of the students should be conducted. A student whose academic performance is deteriorating, the reason for which is not apparent, should be asked to get a thorough medical checkup

There does not seem to exist a proper system to check the qualification of teachers now. The trend of private schools is becoming very common, and everyone is ready to open a school and start teaching. Therefore, the quality of education has fallen whereas the ratio of failing students has gone up.

Trend of academies

In the past few years, the trend of academies and tuitions has flourished as well. A number of academies and tuition center can be found in each city. Although the main purpose of these institutions was to help students by providing extra classes. The students are taught the same thing again in academies that they are taught in school so that they develop a better grip on every subject. However, now it seems that the academies are contributing negatively towards the academic performance of students. It can be observed that majority of the students who have joined academies do not pay attention in classrooms at school because they think that they will study it in the academy. But then having a similar thought in mind that they will study the same topic in school, they do not pay attention at academies either. In this way, they only waste their time and the productive output remains very low.

Bullying

Bullying can affect everyone, not only those who are bullied but those who witness bullying. It is the most serious issue that not only leaves an impact on a student’s academic performance but can disturb him or her for rest of the life. Long-term bullying results in depression and anxiety.

According to a study funded by the National Institute of Health, children who are bullied have lower academic achievement, a greater dislike of school and less confidence in their academic abilities. Therefore, bullying is a major reason of high failing ratio in schools, colleges, and universities.

Solutions

All these issues and the others that cause failure need to be addressed on a priority basis. A number of steps can be taken to ensure that the ratio of students failing in school, colleges and universities remain at a minimum. In order to deal with financial problems, students should be given financial assistance, scholarships, and stipends. Punjab government has set a good example through Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF). Moreover, it should be ensured that every child gets free but quality basic education.

Every school and college must have a basic health center and regular medical check-up of the students should be conducted. A student whose academic performance is deteriorating, the reason for which is not apparent, should be asked to get a thorough medical checkup.

Instead of imposing things on children, parents should listen to what their children want. It is time to realise that all professions are equally important and respectable and that every child has different abilities, interests, ambitions, and dreams which he or she should be allowed to follow. Career counselors and different teachers should help the students in this case in convincing their parents.

Proper criteria should be set on who can and who cannot teach. Just like students, an entry test for teachers should be conducted as well. It should be ensured by the government that the quality of education is uniform.

Above all, everyone must realise that if a student fails, it is not always because of his or her negligence. There can be a lot of other reasons. So instead of bashing the student, try to read between the lines to find the reason for the failure and then uproot the problem.
