ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah on Thursday said that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government had increased government employees’ salaries up to 125 per cent during its five-year tenure.

Starting a debate on the presidential address to the Parliament’s joint session, he said that all institutions should perform their duties within their constitutional domain.

He also said that supremacy of the parliament could be ensured by giving adequate time to the proceedings of two houses by all parliamentarians including the prime minister and ministers. The opposition leader regretted that the country was facing a number of challenges on the external front but was not getting the required attention.

Shah stated that Pakistan has the potential to become a developed country provided its resources are exploited judiciously and properly. The growers of sugarcane were not being paid due prices of their product. The middleman pays sugarcane farmers only Rs 90 per maund, whereas, the Sindh government has fixed sugarcane price at Rs 160 per maund and middleman himself is paying Rs 130 per maund.

He further added that the PPP had provided financial assistance to 4.8 million people during their tenure.

During the session, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP) Cheif, Mehmood Khan Achakzai said that he was being portrayed as a traitor as certain TV anchors were levelling baseless allegations against him.

He said that such baseless allegations pinched him very much and asked the chair to allocate a reasonable time to discuss horse trading allegations being levelled against senate elections.
