‘CAMB resolved around 3000 complex cases based on DNA’

The forensic laboratory of the Center for Applied Molecular Biology (CAMB) has so far resolved around 3000 cases including most complex one and having international importance.
Punjab University CAMB Director Prof Dr Nadeem Sheikh said this talking to APP here on Monday. “On the basis of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) analysis, the cases we resolved including high profile cases like terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket team”, he said.
He said the forensic lab started work in 2003 and the achievements it got so far were pride for not only CAMB but for also the whole nation. He said, “We helped out our law-enforcement agencies to catch the culprits on the basis of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)”.
He said that by using our expertise, the Punjab government had set up Punjab Forensic Agency (PFA). ‘The agency is doing the best work to help law-enforcement institutions for resolving cases against criminals and terrorists.
“PFA is now responsible for all deeds related to identification, detection, screening works related to DNA at provincial and national level”, he said. He said the CAMB had various disciplines and it was engaged in research and development tasks.
To a question, he said that DNA had high importance in crime investigation process. ‘Like finger prints, DNA of any person does not match with any other, except the identical twins’. He elaborated that there were 13 standards for DNA identification which are applied at international level and in Pakistan we applied the same.
