Mashal Khan’s family not happy with verdict: Ayesha Gulalai

ISLAMABAD: Member of National Assembly (MNA) Ayesha Gulalai said that the family members of Mashal Khan are not satisfied with the verdict of his murder case.

In her statement on Thursday, she said that 26 of the suspects were acquitted before police could not produce evidence against them. Gulalai said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) councillor Arif Khan has not been arrested.

“Mashal Khan case should be taken to military court,” he said. She went on to say that terrorism should not be linked with seminaries.

“The incident took place inside a university. Not a seminary,” the MNA said.

On Wednesday, an ATC in Haripur jail had given the verdict in Mashal Khan lynching case, under which one person was given the death sentence, five persons were given multiple terms of life imprisonment, and 25 others received jail sentences. The court also acquitted 26 people in the case.

Mashal Khan was lynched and murdered by a mob on April 13, 2017, after he was accused of committing blasphemy. No proof of him having committed blasphemy was found by the investigators of the case and they decreed that there were political motivations behind the murder. The ATC sentenced one person to death, handed over life sentences to five others while also awarding four-year sentences to 25 others accused in the case and acquitting 26 suspects due to lack of evidence.
