LAHORE: Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Wednesday that Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) was instrumental in helping the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police apprehend the main suspect in Asma rape and murder case.

Sanaullah criticising the performance of KP police said that the suspect lived in the same locality where police are stationed for the last three weeks but they failed to trace him on their own, adding that it was only through the DNA report from Lahore that the law enforcement authorities were able to trace him.

He added that the KP Police attempted to misdirect the case earlier by claiming that the minor had died of natural causes and that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan should appreciate the work done by PFSA in the case.

Earlier in the day, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police claimed to arrest the main suspect, 15-year-old Mohammad Nabi in the four-year-old Asma’s rape and murder case.

The police high ups confirmed arresting of two accused during a press conference at Peshawar on Wednesday morning. Nabi, with his face covered, was also presented before the media.

In presence of KP Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mardan Regional Police Officer (RPO) Alam Shinwari said that arrested accused has confessed his crime.

Police have also taken into custody another individual, Fawad, suspected to be the accomplice of the main accused.

According to Mardan RPO, the 15-year old Muhammad Nabi is a close relative of deceased Asma. The accused in his confessional statement stated that he had taken Asma to a sugarcane field and tried to sexually abuse her. However, after the child cried, he strangled her to death.
