ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Interior on Tuesday passed a bill titled “The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Amendment) Bill, 2018”, suggesting a significant increase in the penalty for animal cruelty, as reported by a local English daily.
The bill— which was moved by Senator Karim Ahmed Khawaja— is the first of its kind since 1890, when the last law regarding animal rights was passed. No amendments have been made to the law since then.
Senator Khawaja also said that it was a matter of concern that the country was still using a law that was introduced by the British, adding that the fines should be increased considerably as the current penalty is so insignificant that no one cares about it.
H suggested that the penalty for killing an animal with cruelty should be increased to Rs 300,000, which is currently only Rs 200.
