TOKYO: In an effort to diversify revenue sources, Japanese videogames maker Nintendo Co Ltd confirmed today that it would team up with US film studio Illumination Entertainment to produce an animation film using its Super Mario Bros characters.

This all came in the works as the Nintendo’s earnings were heavily reliant on the gaming console business.

The film would be distributed by Universal Pictures, President Tatsumi Kimishima added at today’s meeting with analysts. The launch date has not been decided.

Yesterday, the company reported its biggest third-quarter operating profit in eight years, driven by smashing demand for its new Switch games console, and said it expected annual earnings to outstrip its previous estimate.
