Senate elections to be held on time: Rabbani

LAHORE: Chairman Raza Rabbani has said that the Senate elections will be held on time according to the constitution and no unconstitutional move will be acceptable.

Speaking to the media after attending an award distribution ceremony of a private law college at the Aiwan-e-Iqbal on Saturday, he hoped that the new members would take the oath of their office in March.

To a question about the effects of dissolution of any provincial assembly on the Senate elections, he said that nothing was mentioned in the constitution about a complete or incomplete electoral college for the Senate elections.

To another question about the public hanging of any criminal, he said that an amendment was brought to the parliament in this regard, adding that death penalty could be exercised at any place other than jail if it was mentioned in the warrants.

Raza said that it was noticed by the Senate standing committee that a law regarding death penalty in public and a judgment of the supreme court was also a part of the judicial history of the country.

“However, the Senate law committee and human rights committee are jointly reviewing the issue and soon the final report would be released,” he added.

Responding to another question, he said that it was a need of the hour to ensure respect of the institutions for their strength and supremacy, adding that all institutions should work within their limits given in the constitution.

Earlier, while addressing the award ceremony, Rabbani said that the implementation of the law in the country was different for the different classes of society.

Speaking to the new graduates and students, he said that practical life was a bit different than what they experienced as students, and urged the youth to work and bring a change in the society. He hoped that the youth would succeed in reforming Pakistan.

Rabbani also gave away awards to the high achievers of the college.
