LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday dismissed a plea seeking the disqualification of Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed as a member National Assembly (MNA).
After hearing the plea, an LHC bench declared the petition against the lawmaker, as being non-maintainable.
The AML chief had announced to step down as an MNA while addressing a Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT)’s joint protest rally on Mall Road in Lahore earlier this month but had later taken the decision back.
The petitioner argued that by doing so, Sheikh Rasheed had lied to the public about his intention of resigning from his seat in the parliament and hence had rendered himself disqualified under Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
The petitioner requested the court to direct the Election Commission of Pakistan to declare Rasheed’s seat as vacant.
