Senate body directs commissioner to check food quality of five-star hotels

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination on Thursday directed the Islamabad chief commissioner to conduct surprise visits of five-star hotels in the federal capital to check the quality of their food items.

The senate committee meeting, chaired by Senator Sajjad Turi, received a briefing from the chief commissioner on the sale of substandard food in the federal capital and the measures being taken by the district administration to stop the sale of low-quality food.

He said that the local administration was continuing a crackdown against those who were involved in the sale of substandard food items. He informed that the administration was taking action without any discrimination.

The commissioner further said that the administration was regularly checking the quality of food being provided to the citizens. He added that fines had also been imposed and cases registered against the culprits.

He also said that the district administration would never allow anyone to sell unhygienic food items in the city, adding that a strict monitoring mechanism had been adopted in this connection. He further said that the district administration had so far taken immediate action on all complaints.

During the meeting, some senators were of the view that unhygienic food was being served in five-star hotels of the federal capital as well and demanded strict action against them.

The committee expressed its concerns over the open sale of tobacco items near educational institutions in the federal capital and urged the officials concerned to close down and cancel the licenses of all temporary shops established near schools and colleges to protect the health of the youth.
