Dr Ramesh Kumar elected chairman of NA Committee on Statistics

ISLAMABAD: Prominent parliamentarian Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani on Thursday was elected as the new chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee for Statistics during a meeting held at the Parliament House.

He was elected unanimously by all members of the committee, who attended the meeting while representing different political parties.

In his opening remarks, Dr Ramesh Vankwani expressed gratitude to all the members of the committee for electing him as the chairman. He said that statistics play a pivotal role in every field of human activity from worship to business.

The newly elected chairman said that all governmental policies today are based on statistics.

“Statistical data is now widely used in making all kinds of high-level decisions,” he said.

Terming statistics the science of learning from data and numbers, Dr Ramesh Kumar urged that all national governmental and non-governmental institutions must follow appropriate methods to produce trustworthy statistical results.

“We should make sure that our institutes are producing reliable data, analysing the data appropriately and drawing reasonable conclusions,” he said while adding that knowledge of statistics also helps in determining the existing position of the population growth rates, per capita income, unemployment, housing, schooling, medical facilities, number of holy places, and presence of various institutes.

Appreciating the vibrant role of media, the newly-elected chairman also urged the need to provide updated data to the journalists for their news reports.

Dr Ramesh Vankwani, in his concluding remarks, also vowed to play his due role in addressing complaints of bogus data in various presentations by some elements with vested interests. He said that we must not intentionally present biased data, manipulate meaning or influence interpretation.

“The statistical data must be presented as accurately and objectively as possible,” he concluded.
