Women edu important for growth of society: Raza Gillani

LAHORE: Punjab Higher Education Minister Syed Raza Ali Gillani said Monday that the education department is focusing on providing equal opportunities for higher education to both men and women students.

The minister said this while addressing the 2nd convocation of Government Post Graduate College for Women Shad Bagh. Members of the National and provincial assemblies, Lahore Colleges director, the principal, teachers and a large number of students were also present in the auditorium.

Later, the honourable guests also distributed certificates and medals among students for achieving academic excellence. A total of 254 students of graduate and postgraduate courses received degrees and medals in the convocation. Around 22 outstanding girls received gold medals and 10 were given the role of honour for their achievements in co-curricular activities. In addition, five students received the role of honour for academic achievements.

A total of 204 students were awarded certificates of distinctions during the convocation. Around 15 postgraduate and 239 graduate students received their degrees in the 2nd convocation of the college. Speaking on the occasion, the provincial minister for higher education said that in the past years, women have secured the maximum number of positions in all board and university exams which proved that they were equally capable of performing extraordinary feats.

The minister also said that the government was also focusing on providing equal opportunities to girls and boys for their professional growth. He further said that all of us should come forward and do our best to make Pakistan a prosperous country. He said that the government was giving special attention to the education of women with the aim that they would be able to help educate the coming generations as well.

Moreover, the minister said that educating women was very important to point the society in the right direction. He said that educating girls was as important as educating boys, adding that the first message of Islam was an order for the believers to acquire knowledge. Nations around the world who value education, research and hard work are on top of their game, he added.

The provincial minister advised the successful students to share their knowledge with their peers and the society to bring about a positive change in the society.  He said that the actual purpose of education was to work towards the betterment of the society. He further said that if we continue to work hard and realise the importance of education, the day would come soon when the country would be amongst the world’s most successful nations. He said that Pakistan’s future was bright due to a surplus of talented and capable youth in the country.
