Filmfare’s best film award goes to Hindi Medium

Saba Qamar’s Hindi Medium continues to make noise for all the right reasons. While the leading pair of the film including Qamar was nominated, only Irrfan Khan managed to take home the black lady. Along with that, the film also won the award for the Best Film of 2017.

Hindi Medium had been nominated in five categories including Best Film, Saba Qamar for Best Actor (Female), Irrfan Khan for Best Actor (Male), Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor (Male).

Both Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar took to social media to express their excitement over the win. Saba posted a photo on Instagram which she captioned, “Yayyyyy congratulations!!! Sharadakarki.”

Meanwhile, Irrfan said in a statement, “Hindi Medium is very close to my heart and I wish to keep telling stories like these for the audience. When you believe in your work, the world also believes with you. It is good to know that the stories you believe in is what the audiences is also looking for. It’s time for change and I am glad there is acceptance to this change.”

The actor also tweeted that the journey of Hindi Medium has been a testament to celebration of a story that is “told from the heart, of good content and most of all the want and sincerity to inculcate and encourage change”.

He added: “Thank you to Filmfare and our audience who have been part of my journey and also for giving this movie the adulation it has got! Congratulations to the entire team!”

The 63rd Jio Filmfare Awards 2018, were held last night in Mumbai. The starry night was hosted by Bollywood’s baadshah Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Karan Johar, who kept the crowds engaged and entertained.

Exciting performances by Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh and Sunny Leone set the stage on fire.

While Hindi Medium bagged honours in the categories of Best Film and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male), Vidya Balan won her career’s sixth Filmfare award for her passionate portrayal of a middle-aged homemaker who turns into a radio jockey in Tumhari Sulu as she claimed the Black Lady for the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female).

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari won the top award of the night as she won the Best Director award for Bareilly Ki Barfi.

Furthermore, Newton won the Critics’ Award for Best Film, while Rajkummar Rao took home the Critics’ Award for Best Actor (Male) for Trapped. Zaira Waseem won the Critics’ Award for Best Actor (Female) for her stellar performance in Secret Superstar.

This is the first time that the big names in Bollywood did not win many awards. The audiences were ecstatic that deserving actors had won the awards. The Filmfare nominations had also received backlash for nominating masala actors like Varun Dhawan for Badrinath Ki Dulhania.

  • Best Screenplay – Shubhashish Bhutiani for Mukti Bhavan
  • Best Original Story – Amit Masurkar for Newton
  • Best Actor (Male) in a Short Film – Jackie Shroff for Khujli
  • Best Actor (Female) in a Short Film – Shefali Shah for Juice
  • People’s Choice Award for Best Short Film – Anahut
  • Best Short Film (Fiction) – Juice
  • Best Short Film (Non-Fiction) – Invisible Wings
  • Best Music Album – Pritam for Jagga Jasoos
  • Best Playback Singer (Male) – Arijit Singh for Roke Na Ruke Naina from Badrinath Ki Dulhania
  • Best Playback Singer (Female) – Meghna Mishra for Nachdi Phira from Secret Superstar
  • Best Lyrics – Amitabh Bhattacharya for Ullu ka Pattha from Jagga Jasoos
  • Lifetime Achievement Award – Mala Sinha and Bappi Lahiri
  • Best Choreography – Vijay Ganguly and Ruel Dausan Varindani for Galti se Mistake from Jagga Jasoos
  • Best Background Score – Pritam for Jagga Jasoos
  • Best Action – Tom Struthers for Tiger Zinda Hai
  • Best Cinematography – Sirsha Ray for A Death In The Gunj
  • Best Editing – Nitin Baid for Trapped
