The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Deputy Chairman Syed Muzaffar Ali Shah has been dismissed from service on Friday for misuse of authority after the inquiry initiated against him submitted its report.
An inquiry was initiated against Shah in August 2017 over charges of sexual harassment and misuse of power. During this time, Shah was posted as officer on special duty (OSD). The controversial appointment of the deputy chairman by former Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had also prompted the Lahore High Court (LHC) to suspend his appointment.
Before becoming deputy chairman of the authority in 2016, Shah occupied the post of the director general. His new appointment entailed the task of steering the authority towards reforms after it faced criticism for issuing illegal computerised national identity cards (CNICs) to Afghan nationals, among whom the name of former Taliban chief Mullah Mansoor stands out.
