LAHORE: An intermediate Gilgit student succumbed to injuries at Lahore’s General Hospital on Tuesday after being beaten with cricket bats in Model Town’s Dungi Ground area on Saturday (January 13), said the police.
Dilawar Abbass, the deceased, remained on a ventilator for three days after which he could not bear the fatal injuries. He belonged to Khaplu area of Gilgit-Baltistan and was enrolled as an FSC student at a government college of Model Town.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at Liaqatabad Police Station, Dilawar went to the ground to play football with his friends, where they got involved in a quarrel with few other young men who claimed to be associated with a local cricket club.
After the confrontation, as many as 23 young men started beating Dilawar and his friends with cricket bats. The assailants continued to attack him even after Dilawal fell down following the initial blows, states the FIR.
However, at least three dozen people from the adjoining ground came to rescue Dilawar, and he was subsequently shifted to the General Hospital in a critical condition.
Three principal accused along with unidentified 20 others were charged under the Section 324 (attempt to murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The post-mortem report has confirmed that the victim received severe injuries after being hit by the bats, and this became the cause of his death.
After his funeral prayer, the body was taken back to Dilawar’s hometown in a village near Skardu.
