- Shehbaz orders report, directs police to arrest culprits
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident of killing of a student due to brawl during a football match in Liaqatabad area.
In a statement issued here, he extended sympathies to the bereaved family. He has sought a report from DIG Operations and directed that responsible persons should be arrested soon. He also assured to provide justice to the bereaved family.
On Tuesday, the police confirmed that an intermediate student succumbed to injuries here at the General Hospital after being beaten with a cricket bat in Model Town’s Dungi Ground area on Saturday (January 13).
Dilawar Abbass, the victim, remained on a ventilator for three days after which he could not succumb the fatal injuries. The victim belonged to Khaplu area of Gilgit-Baltistan and was enrolled as FSC student at the Government College of Model Town.
In a letter to the Punjab chief secretary and the Punjab Police chief, Gilgit Baltistan Chief Secretary Dr Kazim Niaz demands immediate action in the student’s death and pointed out that the killing of the 12 Grade student has created unrest amongst the local population.
He said that the law and order situation would become challenging with the spread of the news of the killing of Dilawar Abbas among the general public. “We believe that the Punjab government has been taking strenuous measures to arrest the culprits and bring them to the justice,” he said.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) at the Liaqatabad Police Station, Dilawar went to the Dungi Ground to play football with his friends where they quarreled with few other young men claiming to be associated with a local cricket club. After the confrontation, the attackers started beating Dilawar and his friends with the cricket bat.
The assailants continued to attack the victim even after he fell down following the initial blows from the bat, according to the FIR. Three principal accused along with unidentified 20 others were charged under the Section 324 (attempt to murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
