KARACHI: A large number of people belonging to the civil society held a protest outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC), on Thursday, against the rape and murder of eight-year-old Zainab, in Kasur some days back.

They demanded that punishment should be given to the culprits and the family should be given compensation by the government.

The protesters, carrying placards, banners and victim’s pictures, were chanting slogans against the Punjab government.

Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar while addressing the gathering said that, “We strongly condemn the murder of Zainab and demand from the ruling government to arrest the culprit and award him strict punish as soon as possible.”

Akhtar said that there is no law and accountability in Pakistan, as the people are facing several issues, and added that the people cannot tolerate more injustice.

“According to a report, 11 children face such kind of child abuse daily in Pakistan. We have to be united against such injustice,” said the Karachi mayor.

Talking to media persons, civil society leader Rana Asif also spoke against the Punjab Government.

“Politicians have invested billions on the account of infrastructure but no ministry could be formed for child protection,” said the Rana Asif.

He further complained that more than 1,700 cases of sexual harassment and child abuse were reported in 2017, but the Punjab Government has been unable to arrest the culprits.

Syed Tahseen Abidi while addressing the protest advised the provincial and federal governments to make laws against child abuse.

Meanwhile, the activists of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and Social Welfare Department also held a protest against the murder.
