Thar coal reserves likely to add 660 MWs to national grid by 2019

BADIN: The Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) — a joint venture between the government of Sindh and Engro Corporation — has entered its last phase, with over 70 per cent work on the project being completed, SECMC Media and Communication Manager Mohsin Babar.

He was briefing a delegation of the Badin Press Club led by Tanveer Ahmed Arain the other day in Islamkot.

He said the project will add 660 MWs power to the national grid by 2019 while 5000 MW will be added by 2022.

Briefing the journalists, Babar told that besides the project of Samar Mubarak, the Sindh government, under the public-private partnership, signed a Rs 200 billion worth contract with Sindh Engro Coal Mining and Engro power generating Company to generate the address the power crisis in the country.

The project started in 2014, is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project; the work on the project was initiated with 54.7pc partnership of Sindh government, 4pc of China’s and rest belonged to other partners, he apprised the journalists.

He said that Thar coal is the world’s outstanding coal in its quality and expressed hope that this coal will lead the country to prosperity and development.

He said that coal reserves in Thar are double in their size than Saudi Arabia and Iran’s oil reserves, which will help to get “millions MWs of electricity for hundreds of the years”.

Pakistan can save $ 1.30 billion a year by using coal as a source for power generation. He also said that coal-based power production will reduce the price of power units.
