Citizens urge SHC to relocate wine shops from residential areas

HYDERABAD: Citizens from Qasimabad town of Hyderabad, after failing to budge local authorities pleaded before the Sindh High Court (SHC) to relocate wine shops from residential areas.

The petitioners, Nadir Ali, Hassan Ansari and Kamran Khan, pleaded that the wine shops in the town have been operating openly in residential and commercial areas. “There are many apartments, bungalows, markets, schools, tuition centres and clinics in the vicinity.”

The court, on Friday, put the respondents from the excise, police and district administration on notice for January 17.

The petitioners also argued that the shops are a hub of illegal activities and attract criminal and violent people. “Drunken people are often seen walking on the streets where many families live in flats and bungalows.”

They also blamed the police officers posted in Qasimabad for harassing them for filing the complaint.

According to the Prohibition (Enforcement of Hadd) Order, 1979, the liquor shops cannot carry out their business in the settled areas.
