ISLAMABAD: Chief Economist Dr Nadeem Javaid has tendered his resignation and forwarded one-month notice to the Ministry of Planning prior to leaving the job.

“Yes, I have resigned from the post of Chief Economist Planning Commission,” Dr Nadeem Javaid told media outlets on Thursday morning.

Javaid said he had served the government and decided to leave the post ahead of completing his term.

When asked about his future plan, he said different options were under consideration but he would take a decision after a while.

Sources said the government had decided to advertise the post to bring someone from the private sector, as they believed that the Economist Group did not have the capacity to meet the professional requirements of this important post.

After the unceremonious departure of former Chief Economist Dr Pervez Tahir, the Planning Commission failed to find out anyone for the post from the neglected Economist Group. Sources said in the aftermath of Dr Pervez Tahir’s exit in last 12 to 13 years, the bureaucracy had weakened the post of Chief Economist, as it did not allow them to perform independently. All of them were hired from the outside mainly from the private sector.
