ISLAMABAD: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah is likely to be elevated to the Supreme Court, according to reports.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has summoned a meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on January 18 to consider the elevation of the LHC CJ to the apex court. Meanwhile, it has been learnt that Justice Yawar Ali’s name is being considered for appointment as the LHC CJ if Justice Shah is elevated to the SC.
Justice Shah will remain an SC judge till November 2027 if elevated to the apex court in the coming days. This would mean that he could also go ahead to become chief justice of Pakistan for three years in the future. With his elevation, the SC bench will regain its full strength.
Justice Shah was appointed as LHC CJ in June 2015, and he has introduced a number of reforms in the provincial justice system. However, due to certain steps taken by the CJ to curb the culture of resorting to violence in the legal fraternity, one section of lawyers had become frustrated with the changes.
Likewise, disputes arose between the bench and Multan High Court Bar Association last year. Both times, the apex court intervened into the matter and sorted out the issues.
