ISLAMABAD: With civil and military leadership coming together across the country in a bid to form a mutual stance against US President Donald Trump’s latest tweet targeting Pakistan, former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has said it was the US which deceived Pakistan every time.

In a reaction to Trump’s tweet, the former president said that Pakistan has always been sincere to the US in the war against terrorism, but the US betrayed Pakistan.

Musharraf said that the money US ‘spent’ on Pakistan was only because of the sacrifices the Pakistani nation made while fighting terrorism in its own backyard.

“The entire world, including China, was with the US against Taliban. We made the right decision to engage in the war and I still stand by it,” said the former military chief while defending Pakistan’s decision of joining the war against terrorism in 2001.

Former president Musharraf also said that the US can assist Pakistan in reckoning the targets, but any strategy should be led by Pakistan.

The statements from the former president came following Donald Trump’s tweet on Monday, which accused Pakistan of betraying America.

An unparalleled response was shown by the civil and military leadership of the country on Tuesday.

Opting to show restraint, the leadership said that “Pakistan would not act in haste”. Both the leaderships also expressed disappointment over not only Trump’s recent statements, but also those by the US leadership.
