ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet meeting summoned by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will discuss the recent offensive tweet by US President Donald Trump today.
Sessions of the federal cabinet and National Security Committee (NSC) were called by the PM Monday night, following the Twitter statement by Trump.
According to details, the meeting will deliberate on the tweet by Trump along with the US administration’s South Asia policy. Matters of national security and other issues will also be discussed in the sessions.
Trump on Monday began the New Year by accusing Pakistan of giving Washington “nothing but lies and deceit”, announcing that the country will not get any aid in future. He tweeted that Islamabad thinks of US leaders “as fools”.
Trump said that Washington had “foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years”. In turn, he claimed that Pakistan had given “safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help”.
“No more,” he added, in what seems to be the latest iteration of Washington’s “do more” mantra.
Chairman joint chiefs of staff committee and the heads of the armed forces will attend the NSC meeting on Wednesday. The meeting participants will be briefed by DG ISI and DG military operations over the ongoing operations against terrorists.
PAKISTAN RECORDS PROTEST WITH US ENVOY:
The Foreign Office summoned US Ambassador David Hale on Monday night and lodged a protest against Trump’s tweet. The US Embassy confirmed that Ambassador Hale was summoned by the Foreign Office at 9pm.
“David Hale was informed that all the state institutions stood united over Trump’s threats. The envoy was informed that there was no truth in the allegations levelled by the US president. The envoy was also told that there was no truth in US president’s assertion about US aid to Pakistan and that Pakistan had taken all these allegations seriously,” well-placed sources informed Pakistan Today.
