ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Standing Committee for Interprovincial Coordination was informed on Tuesday that the injections to extract maximum quantity of milk from buffaloes, import of meat from Congo Virus affected countries and use of formalin chemical in packed milk lead to a spread of cancer in the country.

The meeting of the committee was briefed by officials of Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council, Punjab and Sindh Livestock departments and Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP).

Punjab Livestock director informed the committee that the BST injections caused cancer to the buffaloes and that the children and the elderly people were consuming the milk of these buffaloes. He said that while other provinces have imposed a ban on the BST injections, Sindh government has only obtained a stay order.

The committee recommended imposition of a total ban on the use of BST Injection in the country.

The officials also disclosed that meat imported from Congo Virus affected countries is confiscated but then released in the market.

The officials were of the opinion that all the packed milk in Pakistan was fake as the use of formalin (which is a chemical, colourless solution of formaldehyde in water) as a preservative was widespread in Pakistan and was fast becoming a leading cause of cancer in the country.

It was further revealed that according to laboratory reports, packaged milk of every brand contained formalin contents mixed with urea fertilizer and other powders.

DRAP chief executive informed the committee that Aksi Taksin injection registration was done for the pregnancy of animals but it is being misused to extract a higher quantity of milk.

Committee member Rana Afzal stated his desire of Supreme Court taking notice of the dangerous milk situation in the country like it was doing in the case of drinking water.
