ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday acquitted a suspect in a case concerning the murder of a five-year-old girl after sexual assault due to lack of evidence.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, heading the three-judge bench of the apex court, observed that the prosecution had failed to prove charges against the suspect beyond a shadow of doubt. He noted that legal requirements were not fulfilled while recording the statement of the suspect by a judicial magistrate, whereas the DNA report also didn’t corroborate the charges against him.

According to the police, the suspect had sexually assaulted the minor before murdering her back in 2010 in Karachi.

In 2015, a trial court had awarded capital punishment to the accused in the case.
