LAHORE: Police have registered a case and arrested a man suspected of running over two police officials in the Defence area of Lahore, resulting in the death of one.
Constable Mustansir died on the way to the hospital, while another named Qasim is still under treatment at the Lahore General Hospital.
The First Information Report (FIR) of the incident stated that constables Mustansar Hussain and Qasim, who had been on duty at a check post near Cavalry Chowk, had signalled a speeding car to stop, but it ended up hitting the two constables and critically injuring them. The driver of the vehicle had managed to flee after the incident, leaving his car behind, the report added.
The FIR nominated the suspects for ‘causing death without intention to cause harm’ and ‘causing harm by rash or negligent driving’.
According to reports, the owner of the car, Mustafa Ahmed, was also present inside the car during the incident. However, police were reluctant to arrest him owing to his reported family relations with PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz. When asked if Mustafa was a relative of the Sharifs, DIG Haider Ashraf pleaded ignorance of the fact.
Debunking the media reports of portraying Mustafa’s father Mian Muneer as her in-law, Maryam Nawaz termed it as a part of vilification campaign.
My samdhi is Chaudhry Munir, not Mian Munir. ARY pls verify before you vilify. pic.twitter.com/fMMMxv1ZXA

Pakistan Today could not reach Ch Munir for comments/clarification over his name being related to the incident.
According to the sources, the heirs of the deceased constable have been under pressure by some police officials to let go of the incident in return for a large amount of money.
A CCTV footage which has captured the incident shows the personnel attempting to run for their lives, as the car takes a sharp turn towards them while apparently trying to take over a car parked ahead of it at the picket.
