Jati Umra road: Reopening of reference proves Nawaz’s innocence, says Maryam

–Opponents’ narratives reflect fear of Nawaz, his generations

The reopening of a 17-year-old reference means that nothing could be found against Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Leaks case, said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz on Friday.

Responding to the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) approval of filing a new reference against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, pertaining to the alleged illegal construction of a two-way road from Raiwind to Jati Umra (Sharifs’ residence) in the year 2000.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the accountability watchdog’s executive board, chaired by NAB Chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal.

Meanwhile, in a series of tweets, Maryam Nawaz said that the narratives of the opponents reflected fear of not just Nawaz Sharif, but his generations as well.

“Several people are destined to be only frightened and will keep on crying,” Maryam stated.

Her statement was in reference to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) giving party ticket to Ali Tareen, son of its disqualified lawmaker Jahangir Tareen, to contest the by-poll on Lodhran’s NA-154 constituency.

Jahangir, the erstwhile PTI general secretary, had lost his seat earlier this month when he was disqualified by the Supreme Court for not being “honest and truthful” as per Article 62 (1) (f) of the Constitution.
