Kyrgyzstan will bid for the UN Security Council non-permanent membership in 2028-2029 years, Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Erlan Abdyldayev told to foreign media on Thursday.
The Philippines is so far the main competitor of Kyrgyzstan, he said. Kyrgyzstan has already tried to join the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member in 2011 but lost to Pakistan.
Each year, the UN General Assembly elects five non-permanent members (out of ten in total) for a two-year term.
However, the ten non-permanent seats are distributed on a regional basis: five for African and Asian countries, one for Eastern European countries, two for Latin American and Caribbean countries, and two for Western European and other countries.
