MMA revived in K-P without JUI-S: report

PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) leadership of five religio-political parties on Tuesday announced the revival of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) for contesting the next general elections in 2018, according to local English daily.  Maulana Samiul Haq faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-S) is not a part of this newly established MMA.

This announcement came at a press conference that was attended by representatives of all the five parties at the provincial secretariat of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) in Peshawar.

Parties that joined hands to form the new alliance include the JUI-F, the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), the Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP), the Jamiat Ahle Hadith (JAH) and the Islami Tehreek, also called Shia Ulema Council.

The JUI-S has joined hands with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), due to which they cannot be a part of the alliance. The JUI-S was an integral part of the alliance that won the elections in K-P in 2002.

JUI-F provincial chief Maulana Gul Naseeb, while addressing the conference said that a tribal committee had been formed to hold meetings with the JUI-S chief to convince them to re-join the MMA.

The JUI-F and JI leaders said that they would quit the federal and provincial governments if asked to do so by the MMA’s central leadership.

The JUI-F is presently a part of the federal government while the JI is an ally of the PTI-led K-P government.

The leaders in a joint statement have announced, “We, the religious parties of the country, have again joined hands to counter the agenda of global imperialists. On January 13, the central cabinet of the MMA would be established in Lahore.”

The leaders said that during the present circumstances it was imperative that the religious parties came together and show unity.
