The Milli Muslim League (MML) has moved the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the suspension of registration of all political parties that failed to follow the provisions of the recently enacted Elections Act 2017.
The petition submitted by Advocate Rizwan Abbasi on behalf MML spokesperson Haq Nawaz Ghumman on Thursday stated that the Elections Act requires all the political parties to submit a Rs200,000 registration fee and a list of 2,000 members with their National Identity Card (CNIC) numbers.
However, despite the passage of deadline–December 2– the said political parties failed to comply with the directives of the ECP, therefore, they should be suspended and their lawmakers be de-notified, the petitioner argued.
Following the cancellation of registration, the lawmakers will automatically cease to hold their seats.
Earlier this year, the ECP had rejected MML’s bid for registration as a political party after the Ministry of Interior objected to its ties to banned militant outfits. Subsequently, The MML — the Jamaatud Dawa’s political front — had moved the Islamabad High Court against the decision.
