Patient receiving treatment for Congo virus dies at Nishtar Hospital

MULTAN: A patient suspected to have been suffering from the deadly Congo virus died at Nishtar Hospital here on Tuesday morning.

According to official sources, Saleem (29) belonged to Mailsi district and was admitted to Nishtar Hospital here on Monday. The patient was facing respiratory distress, the source said, adding that he was shifted on a ventilator at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he breathed his last early Tuesday morning.

When contacted, Nishtar Hospital focal person for infectious diseases Dr Irfan Arshad confirmed that Saleem was a suspected case of seasonal influenza.

He said that tests of the patient had been conducted at Nishtar Hospital and they were awaiting the report to confirm whether or not he was suffering from Congo virus.

The focal person informed that the condition of such patients deteriorated swiftly and the same was true for Saleem too, adding that the patient also suffered cardiac arrest on Monday night.

Fazlain Bibi of Shah Jamal, Muzaffargarh, was another suspected patient who was being treated at the hospital’s ICU, he concluded.
