Will summon PM if I have to, warns IHC judge in online blasphemy case: report

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui said on Friday that he would summon the prime minister if he had to in connection with the blasphemous content on social media case, reported a private media outlet.

The court had earlier ordered a crackdown on those circulating blasphemous content on social media.

“Has the government made any effort to bring back the Pakistanis who were posting blasphemous content while living abroad?” enquired the IHC judge.

The interior secretary who is representing the government apprised the court about the steps taken in this regard, including the formation of a committee.

He further said that a summary has been prepared in this regard which would be sent to the prime minister soon.

“The government has not complied with the court’s verdict,” observed the judge and warned that contempt of court notices can also be issued to interior ministry officials.

Justice Siddiqui said the government could have sought the assistance of intelligence agencies to tackle the issue but it seemed to be succumbing to international pressure, warning further that he would summon the prime minister in connection with the case if needed and also issue contempt of court notices to interior ministry officials.

The judge adjourned the proceedings till December 11 ordering the interior secretary to submit a detailed progress report.
