SUKKUR: Opposition leader in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Saturday said that the government of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) should complete its constitutional tenure and the general elections should take place at their designated time.

Talking to journalists here, he said that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was a grass-roots party, which has always fulfilled the promises it has made to the masses. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has started fearing from the PPP after latter’s power show in Islamabad on December 5, he said.

“He (Imran) had thought the PPP had dissolved,” he said, adding that the PTI chairman was caught unaware by the power show by PPP in the federal capital. Now “he (Imran) is scared,” he said. “Imran Khan should first save his back and then talk about others,” the PPP leader said and asked the PTI chairman to explain funding for his party.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari in his meeting with Pakistan Awami Tehreek leader Tahirul Qadri did not discuss any plan to overthrow the government, Shah said. To a question, he cleared his party’s position for not supporting any extra-constitutional step. “Our party (PPP) will never support any step against democracy and democratic institutions,” he said.

“We will not be a part of any attempt to overthrow the government… we want this government to complete its constitutional term,” he told another questioner. On Thursday, Asif Zardari-led PPP delegation visited the PAT head office to discuss the situation against the backdrop of Justice Baqar Najafi commission report about the 2014 Model Town clash between police and protesters.

Both Zardari and Qadri had said that they had agreed to start a movement against the government if the Punjab chief minister did not step down. Commenting over criticism hurled at the party leadership, Shah said that Imran Khan was alarmed by PPP’s latest power show.
