ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal said on Thursday that Pakistan had unfortunately not been able to overcome conspiracies against it in 70 years, as military dictators have repeatedly seized power, ruined the country and then left the “rebuilding process to civilian governments”.

He said that the motive behind the call for Khatam-e-Nabuwwat in the recently held sit-ins in the country had really been a call for “khatam-e-hakumat” or the end of government. “We are all Muslims,” he said, “but the number of fatwas on the issue in Pakistan is unparalleled across the globe.”

He further said that the country was in need of scientists, whereas what it was producing was an abundance of clerics. He said that while the world was making headway in every field, Pakistanis were busy in pulling each other’s legs and calling names.

He said that Pakistani politics were as good as those of any other country.

He further remarked that Pakistan needed development projects urgently, saying that a lot of time had been wasted in the past 70 years and the nation could not afford to lose any more time.

He criticised the government’s “pseudo-intellectual opponents” for mocking the government’s Vision 2025 introduced by it soon after coming into power.

He praised the ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for its success in “eliminating electricity load-shedding” from the country, saying that 10,000MW of additional power had been added in the national grid during the last four years.

He said that Pakistan’s GDP would have been 6.5 percent by now had it not been for the political turmoil that it had to face recently.
