LAHORE: Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, addressing a news conference in Lahore on Tuesday, rejected the Model Town inquiry report, saying it was “ineffective” and “full of errors”.

The minister also said no one was being blamed in the report. “There was not a single word written in the report that could link Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the deadly incident,” he added.

The report is ineffective as it cannot be presented as evidence in the court of law, he said, adding that the decision of making the report public will not impact the trial.

He explained the decision of making the report public was made on the directive of CM Shehbaz.

Sanaullah also said no police officials, present at the incident’s venue, were being framed in the report. He added the PAT did not present any evidence and the report was based on “false evidences”.

“Therefore, I advised the chief minister against making the report public due to concerns of creating complications,” he maintained.

“Qadri blames the government for the tragedy, but he incited the people towards violence and he kept saying the night before that the time of martyrdom is here,” Sanaullah said.

Responding to a journalist, Sanaullah said that he could ‘swear’ that Qadri knew exactly what happened.

“He [Qadri] knows exactly what happened and just making this allegation to stir trouble for the government,” he said, adding that it didn’t suit Qadri’s stature, as a religious scholar, to make false allegations.

“There are no two ways about it that this issue is politically motivated.”

The minister said different intelligence agencies reported that both parties were involved in the fire exchange; however, these reports from the agencies were not included in the Model Town report.

It is pertinent to mention here that 14 supporters of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Dr Tahirul Qadri were killed and several wounded when a police crackdown to clear roadblocks around the headquarters of Idara Minhajul Quran (IMQ) in Lahore’s Model Town went awry and led to clashes on June 17, 2014.

Subsequently, the Punjab chief minister appointed a one-judge judicial commission, headed by Lahore High Court’s Justice Baqir Najafi, to investigate the tragedy.

  1. The composure and mannerism of Rana Sana, one of the accused, amply describes the culture prevalent in Noon League. One of the most despicable aspect of this culture is to lie with full confidence. Rana Sana lied repeatedly and most disgracefully.
