Power minister seeks CMs’ help in reining in pilferers

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Water and Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari has sought the assistance of all the four chief ministers on the issue of bill recovery and power theft to bring more areas under zero load shedding zone. `

According to a press release by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division), the federal minister proposed in a letter to all chief ministers the establishment of a joint task force by the federal and provincial governments for the development of uniform measures, information sharing and improved coordination. He also proposed to nominate officials concerned on the behalf of the provincial government to lead the efforts in this regard. He wrote that he was ready to meet the provincial chief executives anytime to discuss terms of the cooperation.

Leghari stated that support by the provincial government in this regard will go a long way in improving the standard of living of the people in Pakistan. He said that the federal government has been able to bring Pakistan out of the energy crisis on account of “sufficient electricity being added to the national grid”.

He highlighted the hurdles and challenges that the power sector faces in accomplishing its goals adding that power threat is posing serious threats to revenue collection and is disturbing the liquidity of the sector.

He concluded by saying that collective efforts are needed in furthering the national good. He also mentioned in his letter, the support by provincial governments for the federal government in the introduction of amendments in the legislative network.
