Royalty seems to be a trending topic these days in light of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal engagement.
In light of that, the current Queen of Bhutan, Her Majesty Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck has also become popular and has gained quite a following.
Queen Jetsun Pema is only 27 years old which makes her the youngest queen in the world presenting a sharp comparison to Queen Elizabeth II who is 91-years-old.
Queen Pema was born in Thimphu, Bhutan. She obtained her early education in Bhutan after which she went to the Lawrence School in India. She obtained her higher education from the Regent’s College, London.
Jetsun Pema became the queen when she married His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on 13 October 2011 and was bestowed the title of ‘Druk Gyaltsuen’ (Queen of the Kingdom of Bhutan) by His Majesty.
Sharing his views on his then fiancé, the King said, “Now, many will have their own idea of what a Queen should be like; that she should be uniquely beautiful, intelligent and graceful. I think with experience and time, one can grow into a dynamic person in any walk of life with the right effort. For the Queen, what is most important is that at all times, as an individual she must be a good human being, and as Queen, she must be unwavering in her commitment to serving the people and country. As my queen, I have found such a person and her name is Jetsun Pema. While she is young, she is warm and kind in heart and character. These qualities together with the wisdom that will come with age and experience will make her a great servant to the nation.”
He concluded by saying, “I have been waiting for quite some time to get married. But it doesn’t matter when you get married as long as it is to the right person. I am certain I married the right person.”
The couple has a son, His Royal Highness Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, who was born on 5th February 2016.
The Queen is the Royal Patron of various organisations that work with conservation, environment, and advocacy for persons with disabilities. Her projects also include supporting cottage-based entrepreneurs and rural economy.
Jetsun is said to be an art lover, which she gained an appreciation of while studying in India.
