KARACHI: Former Sindh information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Monday rejected claims that he has been receiving VIP treatment in jail and has said that “those who believed so try and stay in jail for two days”.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader expressed these views outside an accountability court in Karachi hearing into a corruption case against him and 11 others.
During the hearing, Memon pleaded the court to constitute a medical board to provide him with medical services.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials in October had also arrested eleven co-accused alongside Memon who also appeared before the court on Monday as the court was expected to convict them, however, no progress was made in the regard and the hearing was delayed until December 14.
The party workers were also gathered outside the court and had greeted Memon by showering flowers petals.
Sharjeel Memon is facing corruption allegations worth five billion and 77 crore rupees in the award of advertisements of the Sindh government’s awareness campaigns in the electronic media.
The PPP leader, who returned to the country from self-imposed exile in March this year, had obtained protective bail in April in connection with an enquiry initiated by the top graft-buster.
Memon had fled the country in 2015 to Dubai after NAB launched a crackdown against corrupt political figures and bureaucrats as part of the Karachi operation.
Sharjeel Memon was arrested by NAB immediately after his plane landed from Dubai in Islamabad. However, the authorities released him after interrogation.
