Pakistan has been elected to the main policy-making organs of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) during the 17th Session of the General Conference concluded in Vienna, Radio Pakistan reported on Saturday.
UNIDO is a part of the UN that “promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalisation and environmental sustainability.”
Pakistan’s Ambassador in Vienna Ayesha Riyaz has also been elected as the vice-president of the General Conference.
Welcoming the selection, FO spokesperson said that Pakistan has had a strong relationship with UNIDO and will continue cooperating with the agency in achieving the targets set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Earlier, in a general conference held in Paris on November 30, Pakistan was also elected into various bodies of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
For developing nations like Pakistan, inclusive and sustainable industrialisation plays a pivotal role not only in economic but also in social development, through job creation that reduces poverty and helps decrease inequalities.
