Peshawar University students demonstrate against increase in fees, lack of facilities

PESHAWAR: Students of Peshawar University on Tuesday boycotted their classes and staged a demonstration outside the administration block in protest of an increase in tuition fees.

Talking to media, a female student remarked, “The university increases the tuition fee by 10 percent every year, which is not affordable for everybody especially the students from middle-class.”

The students also demanded the provision of scholarships to deserving students as well as the provision of an endowment fund and research grants to PhD students.

They further complained that they were not being provided with important facilities, including hostels for day scholars and transport facilities for students living in hostels.

They said that students who fail to follow university rules should be investigated.

The students subsequently moved their protest outside the vice-chancellor’s (VC) office.

“We will continue the protest till our demands are met,” said a male student.

The university administration agreed to hold talks with the students to call off the protest. However, both the parties failed to reach an agreement.

The protesting students continued their protest into the night and camped outside the VC’s office. The students remarked that they will go on a hunger strike if necessary.
