LAHORE: Former Qatari prime minister (PM) Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani reached Lahore on Wednesday to meet ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

A 13-member delegation accompanied the former Qatari PM who met with Nawaz Sharif at the PML-N leader’s Jati Umra residence in Raiwind, soon after reaching Lahore. According to records, the two former prime ministers discussed matters of mutual interest and business deals.

The Qatari royal then called on Shehbaz at his Model Town residence, in which they reportedly discussed bilateral ties and LNG projects in Punjab.

The Arab royal family member is a close friend of Nawaz’s and attempted to help the former prime minister during the Panama Papers case proceedings in the Supreme Court (SC) earlier this year.

His letter submitted before the SC claimed that the London properties of the Sharif family were bought from the proceeds of the real estate business investments of the disqualified PM’s father, executed in 1980.

The said letter, as reported by a local news channel, depicted that the Qatari royal family member promised to meet with the Panama Papers’ Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in Doha on the condition of being provided immunity from any court-related matters and resulting investigation in Pakistan.

He also vowed in that letter to verify the authenticity of his two previous letters that were sent to Pakistan with regard to the Panama Papers case.

The letters in question were slammed as phony by a few political leaders, who alleged that it was produced to help the then-prime minister escape money laundering charges.
