Abbasi displayed lack of mettle

  • And PML-N fell prey to its own tactics

Prime Minister Khaqan Abbasi has failed to grow in the chair he occupies. Instead of catching the bull by the horns, he let the TLYR’s agitation take its course till the situation became uncontrollable. What the leaders of the TLYR consequently managed to come up with, whether on their own or as pawns in the hands of a grandmaster, was a tour de force. The hostile propaganda against the PML-N government combined with attacks on the houses of three sitting ministers, a former interior minister and an MNA made Nawaz to postpone two pubic addresses. Some of his political opponents might also raise the issue to incite the voters when Sharif holds public meetings. Following in the footsteps of the terrorists who forced the PPP out of the electoral race in 2013, the extremists too might try to do to same to PML-N in the forthcoming elections.

Opposition parties are attacking the government from their peculiar angles. The PTI wants the PM and his cabinet to resign forthwith to pave way for early elections. The PML-Q demands the formation of a national government. Hoping to gain little either from fresh elections or a national government, Jamaat-e-Islami has tried to ingratiate itself with the fanatical crowd by criticising the government for its failure to hold meaningful talks with the protesters. The PPP has also condemned the government for resorting to a botched up operation instead of persuading the TLYR to end the sit-in. To assert its secular claims the party has however condemned the trend of using religion to achieve political objectives.

Captain (r) Safdar, elected on PML-N ticket, delivered a fiery speech in the NA against the Ahmadi community and joined the Faizabad sit-in. It was not a dharna, he claimed, but a chanting of “darood-o-salam” or the holy prophet’s praises. He conveniently failed to hear the unending reiteration of foul language by the TLYR leaders against whosoever differed with them, not sparing even the judiciary. Some might see a purpose behind the madness. Captain (r) Safdar could be playing the role of a go-between.

  1. Abbassi’s biggest crime is facilitating a wanted criminal to escape from the country. He provided his official aircraft to Ishaq Dar for the purpose. Would any law-abiding Country accept this? Why our Superior Judiciary has not noted such a huge violation of law?
