746th annual urs of Sakhi Jam Datar begins

NAWABSHAH: The three-day 746th annual urs celebrations of Hazrat Syed Asghar Ali Shah, popularly known as Sakhi Jam Datar, started on Monday with the arrival of thousands of devotees in the Jam Sahab town to pay homage to the saint.

Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) member of provincial assembly Ghulam Qader Chandio, Benazirabad Deputy Commissioner Nauman Siddiq, Pir Khalid Sultan Baho and caretaker of the shrine Faqeer Naveed Hussain Wistro inaugurated the urs by laying a floral wreath on the grave of the saint.

Talking to reporters, Ghulam Qadir Chandio said that the PPP had always promoted the culture of Sindh festivals, including Mela and Malakhra, as they were an integral part of our culture. He said that that Sufi saints had imparted the lesson of peace, harmony and brotherhood.

The deputy commissioner said that the teachings imparted by the Sufi saints were guiding principles for us to spend our lives with good manners by implementing the teachings of the saints.

Paying rich tribute to the Sufi saint, he said that Sindh was the land of Sufis and holy men who preached and spread the message of love, peace, harmony and brotherhood among humanity. The deputy commissioner further said that during the three-day annual urs, Sufi musical concert would be arranged, whereas, departments of Agriculture and Live Stock would setup stalls for the exhibition.

He further said that during the urs celebrations, the provincial health department would organise hepatitis vaccination and screening camps for the devotees. The deputy commissioner also said that security arrangements had been made to avert any untoward incident during the celebrations.

On the occasion, Ghulam Qadir Chadio and the deputy commissioner visited medical camps, animal exhibition and stalls setup at the event.

The shrine caretaker Faqeer Naveed Hussain presented the guests with Sindhi cap and ajrak. He lauded the efforts of the district administration for making exceptional arrangements for the urs.
